Troy-Bilt TB4SC : Troy-Bilt TB4SC 25cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered 150 MPH Handheld Blower
The Troy-Bilt TB4SC blower, I love it. I took the unit out of the box, put oil in it and filled the tank with gas. I pushed the primer button three times after it filled with fuel (not the ten times recommended in the manual) and right out of the box the unit started with only a few pulls. Now, when it's cold, I prime it three times, set the choke to position 3 (fully closed) and it starts on the first pull. Once warm, it starts on the first pull every time and with little effort, more like a half-pull, probably the spring-assisted starting feature at work, VERY nice in comparison to similar two-strokes. I find myself having to moderate the pull strength so as not to pull too hard.
I had the 28cc two-stroke Husqvarna picked out when I saw this one on sale and I'm glad I bought this one instead. The four-stroke engine is a huge advantage. There's no need to mix gas and oil, just put gas in it and go. For me, this means I'm more likely to use it more often since there's no pre-use fussing around at all. Also, in general, four-stroke engines last longer than comparable two-strokes, with proper maintenence (regular oil changes, etc).
As for wind, this unit makes it! I agree with the poster who said that MPH has little to do with clearing power. While this unit is a little heavier than the unit it replaced, it does the work at least three times faster. The unit is around eleven pounds but I just switch hands as needed. The intsructions say not to use it in the left hand but come on, be real... I just make sure not get my pant leg caught in the air intake and when I do I just quickly pull it away, no big deal.
Pros:
- Clearing power on par with any comparable two-stroke.
- Four-stroke convenience and durability.
- VERY easy starting.
- No two-stroke smoke or smell.
- Reusable foam air filter.
Cons:
- About 10% heavier than comparable two-strokes but this is negligible IMO.
I love this blower, it's my new favorite toy and "toy" is a good description. I have a large Red Maple in my front yard and a large half-circle driveway. My neighbors all have large trees and the Troy-Bilt TB4SC actually makes fall leaf cleanup enjoyable.
